Free skate event was open to community
About 80 people joined youth hockey players in Middleton on Sunday to take part in a free community skate, according to club organizers.
The no-cost ice skating event -- hosted by Middleton Wings Hockey Club at the Capitol Ice Arena -- is meant to offer the community the chance to experience the sport first hand, organizers said. Free skate events also serve as recruitment opportunities for the club.
Middleton High School hockey players were on hand at Sunday’s skate to help beginners; kids new to ice skating were able to use a prop to help them balance on the ice.
Organizers said they don’t have another open skate planned yet as the teams are currently mid-season.
About 250 area kids ages 4-18 are members of the Division 1 youth hockey club in Middleton.
