Local Madison Boy Earns Scholastic, Martial Arts Honors

Jon Wirtzfeld was recently presented with the Principal’s Award at St. Maria Goretti on Madison's near west side.

The Principal’s Award is a highly prestigious award given to the top two 8th grade students that display the highest degree of maturity, leadership and character.

In addition, Wirtzfeld has also earned high honors at the school by maintaining the required grade point average during the past year, earning both awards at St. Maria Goretti is a very rare occurrence.

"Watching Jon Wirtzfeld grow from a shy reserved kid to a grown mature leader in our school is very amazing to see. I’m very proud of Jon’s accomplishments," said Mr.Mathiam Mbow, owner and head instructor of Kicks Unlimited Middleton.

The Krispy Kreme Donut store in Middleton is offering a dozen free glazed donuts when you bring in an ugly tie. All you have to do is snag one of dad's ugly ties and bring it to Krispy Kreme before Father's Day.

The Krispy Kreme store is already adorned with dozens of ugly ties. Your dad's ugly tie could join the others that are haging from the ceiling at the Middleton Krispy Kreme.

The Middlton Krispy Kreme has been open since late March and features it's famous hot glazed donuts and a variety of specialty donuts.

Krispy Kreme is located at 2109 Deming Way in Middleton.

The Capital Brewery was the place to be on Saturday when the 4th annual Burgers and Brew took place.  The Burgers and Brew event is presented by REAP Food Group.  REAP (Research, Education, Action and Policy) Food Group is a non-profit organization located in Madison

REAP is committed to projects that shorten the distance from farm to table, support small family farmers, encourage sustainable agricultural practices, preserve the diversity and safety of our food supply and address the food security of everyone in our community.

The fundraiser features Dane County's most popular chefs who pair up with Wisconsin brewers and farmers to serve up unique mouthwatering burgers and delicious beer.

New Director Of Teaching And Learning-Student Services Announced

Jerry Nicholson has been hired as the new Director of Teaching and Learning- Student Services, beginning July 1.

Nicholson, who is currently the Director of Pupil Services in Wisconsin Dells, will be assuming the position currently held by Erin Kuehn-Schettler, who has accepted a position in Verona Public Schools.

In addition to his current role at Wisconsin Dells, Nicholson has served as a middle school teacher, a high school assistant principal and Director of Pupil Services.

Middleton Basketball Highlighted On ESPN

The Middleton Cardinals boys basketball team was the winner of  ESPN's SportsCenter Highlights of the Week.  This ESPN feature is a joint venture with YouTube which allows local sports highlights to compete for the top spot of the week.

After weeks of screening submissions, four entries were selected as finalists. It came down to these four: Middleton 3 Miracles, 6 Year Old Dribble Skills, Back Flip Penalty Shot and Off the Head Game Winner.

On a recent episode of SportsCenter, Jay Harris of ESPN announced the winner of the YouTube SportsCenter Your Highlight contest and it was the MIDDLETON 3 MIRACLES!!

The 3 Miracles refer to the three amazing shots which led Middleton to run away from a close situation against Madison West.

3 Middleton Teens Earn Meriter Scholorships

The Friends of Meriter awarded three Middleton seniors with college scholarships. 

Ismat Bhuiyan, Emily Feiner, and Katherine Kretzschmar each received a $2,000 scholarship.

Tips from Meriter’s Greenbush Garden Bistro, Dr. Joe’s Coffee Clinic and valet parking finance the scholarship program. 

Nineteen scholarships were given to area high school seniors who plan to pursue health care careers. 

Four of the students have a parent who works at Meriter. The students were recognized at an awards luncheon on Wednesday, May 4.

Since its formation in 1987, Friends of Meriter has awarded $356,000 worth of scholarships to 336 high school students pursuing a health care career.

3 Retired Guard Members To Enter Wis. Army National Guard Hall

Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and senior Wisconsin National Guard leaders will honor retired Brig. Gen. James Daley of Janesville, retired Maj. Lynn Rasmussen of Madison and retired Command Chief Warrant Officer William Richardson of Middleton on Sunday.

The three retired guard members will join the prestigious Wisconsin Army National Guard Hall of Honor during an induction ceremony at 1 p.m. in Witmer Hall at the Joint Force Headquarters located at 2400 Wright Street on Madison's north side.

Daley enlisted in the Marines in 1966, earning a Bronze Star and Purple Heart during a 1967-68 tour in Vietnam. 

Rasmussen enlisted in the Wisconsin National Guard in 1975 and was assigned to the 132nd Support Battalion. She retired as a Major in 1995. She has received numerous civilian awards for her work with the Department of Military Affairs.
