Teaching a second calling for Cross Plains 'Top-Notch Teacher'

Teaching a second calling for Cross Plains 'Top-Notch Teacher'

5th grade educator Jenniper Hylbert nominated for praise by student

After several years of running a business with her husband, a now-teacher at Cross Plains Elementary School discovered her true calling is within the hallways of the school.

At Park Elementary, Jenniper Hylbert feels right at home. This is her place.

"I know that I love this because I think about it all the time," Hylbert said. "I think any teacher will tell you this."

This is Mrs. Hylbert's first year teaching. In fact, teaching is her second career.

Back in the day, Hylbert and her husband owned an ecological computer-based business in Boulder, Colo. But being an educator was always in the back of her mind, she said.

"When we decided to disband [our computer business], both of us thought about teaching," Hylbert said. "I love being a teacher. I really want to do this for a long time."

4th-graders take part in 'Odyssey' day

Fourth-graders at Elm Lawn were able to participate in a day of problem-solving activities that educators said help build real world skills.

The Odyssey of the Mind Day Away took place Feb. 22.

Four Elm Lawn Elementary classrooms offered different activities and students rotated every 45-60 minutes. The activities all involved creative problem solving and required the kids to partake in collaborative teamwork.

In Chris Conohan’s classroom, students used toothpicks and clay to build a load-carrying structure from simple materials like toothpicks and clay.

"Students are naturally curious and willing to experiment when they have the opportunity," Conohan said. "They like to conquer these challenges. But we enjoy watching the teamwork, critical thinking discussions and development of a problem-solving strategy."

School partners with museum on project

A Cross Plains coffee house will host a student art show this week.

A reception will be held Crossroads Coffeehouse in Cross Plains on Thursday from 4-6 p.m. for the Everyday Art Project, a joint venture between Clark Street Community School and the Madison Children's Museum.

The exhibit profiles three everyday artists who live and work in Dane County. Students worked with the artists and MCC staff to design the art exhibit; and CSCS teachers Robyn Acker and Jim Mathews oversaw the project.

"Everyday Art" was originally displayed at the museum but is now at Crossroads Coffeehouse, 2020 Main St., until March 10, Mathews said.

"The hope is that this will also kick-start a second round of interest,'' Mathews said.

Music-driven performance Monday at library

The Middleton Public Library will present "Daughters of Africa," a performance by Mixed Blood Theater from the Twin Cities. Monday evening's 45-minute show -- which the library said is appropriate for all ages -- is meant to coincide with Black History Month.

"Daughters of Africa" presents the history of African-American women from slave ship survivors to their start on the silver screen. The 7 p.m. performance in the Archer Room commemorates the famous and the overlooked in celebration of the triumph of pride, determination and courage.

Fueled by the songs of Lena Horne, Aretha Franklin, Queen Latifah and many others, the 45-minute music-driven show is appropriate for all ages.
