With the warmer weather comes an increase of bicycle use on area roadways. Authorities are now warning the growing presence of bikes on streets mean they're expecting to see a surge in the number of car-bicycle crashes.
Last week, there were at least three Madison-area incidents that involved children on their bicycles being struck by cars.
To teach young people how to stay safe while biking, the Middleton Police Department held a bike safety event during the weekend.
"In case there was an accident, helmets will be the best way of protection," said Tom Wilson, of the Middleton Police Department. "And to teach them the rules of the road. Avoiding traffic, obstacles in the roadway, people, and just avoiding anything that could be a danger to them."
Police said children will usually follow their parents' example. Parents are reminded to always wear their helmets and be sure to follow the rules of the road closely.
