Youth Take Part In MOM Summer Camps

Youth Take Part In MOM Summer Camps

Area kids are learning about poverty and the needs of the community through a series of summer camps organized by the Middleton Outreach Ministry.

"MOM realizes that part of our larger mission is to educate our community about the real effects living in poverty has on everyone living in our community," said Cheri Farha, MOM Distribution Center manager. "By reaching out to the youth in our community, we hope to instill a belief in the younger generation that helping those in need is a responsibility we all share."

Three one-week sessions are offered to youth entering Grades 6 to 8 as of the 2011-2012 school year.

The full day camps include daily service:  working in the MOM Food Pantry Garden, stocking shelves at the MOM Food Pantry, working at one of MOM's mobile food pantries and doing chores for seniors and the disabled at Voss Haus and Segoe Terrace.

The camps also incorporate daily recreational opportunities.

Emerald Ash Borer Traps in Orchid Heights Park

Emerald Ash Borer Traps in Orchid Heights Park

In an effort to understand and treat the Emerald Ash Borer problem, the city continues to look for ways to stay ahead of the problem.

The Emerald ash Borer is an exotic, invasive beetle that is having a significant impact on the city's urban forest.

More than 28 percent of the city's trees (both on public and private land) are Ash trees.

The detection process will allow the city's horticulture division to detect the problem before it becomes unmanageable.

Depending on the size of the tree, some of the smaller trees will be removed and the larger trees will be treated.

The removal of the trees will allow the city to diversify it's urban forest. The city will look to replace the trees with Oaks, Sycamores, Gingkos, Horse Chestnuts and Buckeyes among others.

Believing that ending the cycle of poverty comes in part with empowerment and education, Middleton Outreach Ministry, which has one of the largest Food Pantries in Dane County, has kicked off an innovative program to teach and give the opportunity to people in need to grow their own food.

“Last year, MOM started a food pantry garden across the street from our pantry on donated land, and supplied the pantry with over 1,000 pounds of fresh produce," said Cheri Farha, Manager of the MOM Distribution Center. "This year, we have taken it a step further by expanding the amount of garden plots and offering them to MOM clients who want to learn to grow their own food."
