Dane County Dive Team takes Stake in the Lakes

On Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3, Take A Stake In The Lakes will be celebrating their 25th anniversary.

Hundreds of divers will be participating in a lake clean-up on Lake Monona and Lake Mendota and both weekend events will include member of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team.

Saturday’s event will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on Lake Monona at Yahara Park Place, and Sunday’s event is on Lake Mendota from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mendota County Park.

On Saturday, June 2, a Dane County Sheriff’s Office boat will be on Lake Monona near the Yahara River keeping watch over the many divers that are expected to participate in the morning’s events.

From 9 to 11 a.m., dive flags will be on the water to warn boaters that divers are in the water. By law, boaters must stay at least 100 feet from those flags.

Get Dirty for Dane Day to be held at Pheasant Branch Conservancy

On Saturday, May 12, the Dane County Environmental Council and Recreational Equipment Inc. will be hosting “Get Dirty for Dane," a day to get outdoors and participate in land stewardship projects throughout the county.

The Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy is sponsoring one of the volunteer stewardship projects for that day.

The goal for this day is to get people out to the amazing public natural areas in Dane County, and help connect new volunteers to these places.

Our event will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Dane County section of the conservancy.

The group will be cutting invasive plants on the hill.

Those who come out are asked to wear long pants and sleeves, close toed shoes and to bring gloves. Some gloves will be available for use.

Clean & Green Middleton event to be held Saturday

Clean & Green Middleton event to be held Saturday

Clean & Green Middleton will be held on April 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will be held at Greenway Station at 1600 Aspen Commons.

Folks are invited to drop off donations for charities and properly recycle items all at a single location.

Donate to St. Vincent de Paul, Habitat ReStore, Middleton Kiwanis and other local charities: clothing; household goods; furniture; appliances less than 10 years old; durable medical equipment (crutches, wheelchairs, shower chairs, etc.); eye glasses; books; used and surplus construction materials, fixtures, tools and supplies. Arbor Day celebration scheduled at Pheasant Branch Conservancy

The city of Middleton is celebrating Arbor Day and the recognition of International Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at John C. Bock Community Forest, in the Pheasant Branch Conservancy.

Visitors can help plant trees as part of oak savanna and oak woodland restoration at Bock Forest. The city’s forester, an ISA certified arborist, and an ecologist will be on hand to offer tree planting tips and an update on the restoration process.

Following the tree planting, an ecologist from BioLogic Environmental Consulting will lead a birding hike to educate visitors about area birds and enhancing local habitat.

Middleton Airport improvements approved

A $315,790 project to install fencing and address soil erosion concerns at the Middleton Municipal-Morey Field Airport has been announced by Gov. Scott Walker.

Eric Johnson, airport development engineer with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, said the chain link fence and gates will provide added security to the aviation fueling terminal on the east side of the airport.

In addition, the project includes funding to stabilize the banks of Pheasant Branch Creek to prevent erosion along airport property.

The project is expected to begin in May and be completed by August.

The state and city of Middleton are each contributing $7,895 to the project. The rest of the funding will come from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Middleton tackling waste by controlling unwanted mail, phonebooks

To combat unwanted mail, the city of Middleton has joined forces with communities across the country to debut a zero-waste initiative that will allow consumers to stop unwanted phone books, catalogs, coupons and credit card solicitations at the source.

The free service, designed by Catalog Choice, will help Middleton shed millions of pounds of waste and thousands of dollars in costs. Middleton residents and businesses can sign up for the mail preference service at https://middleton.catalogchoice.org.

Middleton is a leader taking strides toward a zero-waste mission and is setting a positive precedent for consumer choice, said Chuck Teller, Executive Director of Catalog Choice in a news release.

With the annual collection and landfill cost of the mailings estimated at up to $10 per household, the cost savings will be significant.
