Wallet thief targets Middleton business

In the past week, the Middleton Police Department has taken two reports of wallets being stolen from a restricted employee areas at a Middleton business.

Police said the calls came from a business in the 1300 block of Deming Way.

In at least one case, the thief was found to have entered the business via a secluded and unlocked employee door, police said.

After entering the business, the thief went to a nearby cubicle area and stole an employee’s wallet from an unattended purse, police said. The man left the building on foot after being seen, they said.

He is described as a white or light-skinned male with an average build and a height of about 5 feet 11 inches. He was wearing sunglasses, a beanie and had on a gray hooded sweatshirt with jeans. He was last seen getting in a gold four-door car with a rear spoiler that was parked across the street.

Cross Plains man faces charges after domestic incident

A Cross Plains man was arrested on Wednesday night on several charges following a domestic incident on Valley Street in the Village of Cross Plains, according to the Dane County Sheriff's Department.

Officials said John S. Soppe, 37, was taken into custody on without incident, after a 911 caller reported that he was armed and threatening to harm himself and others in the house. 

The victims of the incident were able to leave the home and escape to a neighbor’s house before deputies arrived, officials said.

Soppe faces charges of intoxicated use of a firearm, second-degree recklessly endangering safety, domestic disorderly conduct while armed and battery, authorities said.

Update: Middleton man, Huber inmate declared AWOL Returns

An inmate from the Dane County Jail that was declared AWOL on Tuesday morning returned to the facility at about 7 p.m. that night, according to the Dane County Sheriff's Office.

Ladale (Dale) Martin, 39, of Middleton, is serving a sentence on charges of not paying child support.

Martin was released from the Public Safety Building per his Huber privileges at about 8:45 a.m. to pick up a prescription medication, but he did not return, officials said.

Middleton Police Launch Free Online Bicycle Registration System

In an effort to help reduce incidents of bicycle theft and help police identify owners of the hundreds of lost bicycles picked up each year, the Middleton Police Department has launched a free online bicycle registration system.

City of Middleton residents should go to the Police Department website, www.MiddletonPD.com, and look for the bicycle registration link under online services. You will be able to submit descriptions, serial numbers and even upload pictures for up to five bicycles per transaction.

Fitchburg Woman Faces 4th OWI Charge After Traffic Stop In Middleton

A 29-year-old Fitchburg woman faces her fourth drunken driving charge after she was pulled over by Middleton police officers near the intersection of Mayflower Drive and Maywood Avenue early Saturday morning.

Kory L. Schaaf was stopped at 1:18 a.m., police said.

In addition to the OWI charge, Schaaf faces charges of operating after revocation and obstructing an officer, police said.

Schaaf was taken to the Dane County Jail.

Impaired Driver Faces Multiple Charges After Crash On Far West Side

A 38-year-old Middleton man faces multiple charges including drunken driving after he drove his pickup truck into the back of car that had slowed for traffic on Madison's far west side.

Police said the crash occurred at about 3:15 p.m. on Monday at South High Point Road.

The victim, a 36-year-old Madison driver, had engaged his brakes due to traffic up ahead, police said.

Marijuana and prescription pills were recovered from driver of the pickup, who was later identified as Jason R. Klingbeil, police said.

17-Year-Old Faces Theft Charges In Middleton

Middleton police said officers responded to numerous reports of valuables stolen from unlocked vehicles and unlocked garages in the North Lake and Orchid Heights Neighborhoods last weekend.

On Monday morning, while investigating similar reports in the Fox Ridge Neighborhood, officers located evidence that led them to a possible suspect location on Century Avenue.

Further investigation led to the arrest of Marquon M. Clark, 17, of Middleton on tentative charges of burglary and obstructing, police said.

Officers remind residents to lock their vehicles and homes, keep valuables in vehicles out of plain view and to contact police if you find things missing or disarranged. Suspicious activity in your neighborhood should be promptly reported to the police, as well.
