CCR owner built company from scratch

The owner of a foster care company accused of misusing $6.1 million in taxpayer dollars built his operation from the ground up.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports Dan Simon began Community Care Resources 23 years ago. He built the company into the largest for-profit foster care placement agency in the state, licensing foster parents and contracting with counties to place children in their homes. The newspaper reported the company generates about $6 million in annual revenue.

The state Department of Children and Families revoked CCR's license. The agency alleges CCR misused tax dollars to inflate salaries, purchase luxury cars and personal travel. Simon has denied the allegations.

Middleton to host 50th anniversary celebration

Middleton to host 50th anniversary celebration

The City of Middleton is hosting an open house in celebration of its 50th anniversary as a city.

The city will host a community event the evening of April 9 at the Middleton Fire station.

Residents are invited to enjoy cake and sets by the Madison Brass Band and city officials will speak about the city's progression since its incorporation.

Middleton originated as a fur-trading post in the 1830s, according to a release from the city. Railroad tracks were laid through the area, with Middleton Station created in 1856. In 1905 Middleton Station became incorporated as a village, dropping the "Station" but retaining the name "Middleton."

Middleton now has 18,000 residents.

School days to get 4 mins. longer

Buses, pick up times affected by change

Starting April 1 through the remainder of the school year, the Middleton-Cross Plains School District will increase the school day by 4 minutes at all levels.

The addition will make up for instruction hours required by the state Department of Public Instruction that were lost due to inclement weather this winter.

The district said in release on its website that parents were notified about the change via e-mail on Thursday.

The 4 minutes will be added to the end of the day at every school except Glacier Creek Middle School, where the school day will start 4 minutes earlier.

Bus schedules in the morning will remain the same for all schools, including Glacier Creek, the district said. Buses will be affected after school, so the school district said children may arrive home a little later than they had before April 1.

Sauk Trail parents, kids read during pajama party

Sauk Trail parents, kids read during pajama party

Imagine keeping your jammies on for an extra hour and curling up to read a book before starting your day.

That's how hundreds of Sauk Trail students, parents, and staff began their Thursday morning during the recent Literacy Week. With blankets, mats, and pillows, and an occasional Teddy Bear, cozy groups of students and adults created dozens of book nooks to fill the entire school gym.

Attentive listeners of all grades and sleepwear heard their favorite books being read by parents and reading buddies.

“We brought parents in to keep building our connection with them, and what better way than to invite them to come and have a reading opportunity with their children," said Rebecca Saeman, a Sauk Trail Elementary teacher. "The gym was packed and the Sauk Trail Wolf mascot made a special appearance, finding it difficult to walk around because it was so crowded."
