Redefined Performs At Middleton Public Library

On Thursday, March 24, Redefined, a University of Wisconsin-Madison Choral Group performed some great songs such as Africa, Hey Ya, Many the Miles and a mix between three different songs at the Middleton Public Library.

They have been performing for ten years and I can tell that all of the kids in Redefined enjoy singing.

There are 17 students in Redefined. All are non-music majors at UW-Madison.

They have performed all across the Midwest, in Madison, and recently on an episode of NBC’s Dateline. Redefined is celebrating their 10th anniversary with a performance on Saturday, April 9 at the Overture Center.

Faulty Asphalt Means University Ave. Will Be Repaved This Spring

Faulty Asphalt Means University Ave. Will Be Repaved This Spring

Madison street crews said they'll need to redo work on some popular roadways this spring. Officials said the work will include having to peel off the top layer of asphalt and replace it on University Avenue.

The first round of roadwork took place last summer, but because of problems with asphalt, Madison city engineer Glen Yoerger said the roads need to be redone.

"It was something in the mix of the asphalt material," Yoerger said. "There's a number of things you mix together to come up with a hot mix asphalt. It could be the materials themselves that were faulty. Or, it could be the amounts that were mixed together that were faulty."

Officials said the city won't incur any extra costs for the repaving. Construction is expected to last about two to three weeks.

Middleton Girls Knocks Out Defending Champs

Middleton Girls Knocks Out Defending Champs

Kerry Gardner had 16 points and Rachael Eklund added 13 as top-ranked Middleton used a strong second half to knock off defending champion Milwaukee Pius 50-39 Friday night in a WIAA Division 1 girls state semifinal at the Kohl Center.

Eklund had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Cardinals (26-1), who will face No. 2 Glendale Nicolet (25-2) in Saturday's state final.

It will be the third state final appearance for Middleton, which was runner-up in 1993 and 2003. The Cardinals have won 26 straight games since falling to Morgan Park (Ill.) in their season opener.

The third-ranked Lady Popes (25-2), who had their 10-game winning streak snapped, led 26-25 at halftime, but shot just 4-for-26 (15.4 percent) from the field in the second half.

Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District Named Energy Star Leader

Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District Named Energy Star Leader

The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency as an Energy Star leader for superior energy efficiency in each of its ten schools for 2010.

The district received EPA’s Top Performer and 20 Percent awards.

"The students and staff of MCPASD should be proud that their efforts and commitment to conserving energy is being recognized beyond our community" said Tom Wohlleber, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services. "Our goals of increasing student and staff awareness/knowledge regarding energy usage in our schools, integrating energy management with energy education, and applying knowledge gained from classroom experience to the day-to-day operation of district facilities is being realized in a big way."

Cupcake Drive To Raise Money For Epilepsy Research

Local company CareFusion is hosting a cupcake-selling fundraiser with the proceeds going toward seizure research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

CareFusion has made medical devices for people who suffer from epilepsy for more than 50 years.

One of those devices included the EEG, which helps doctors see electrical activity generated by the brain and often helps to diagnose seizures.

"By stimulating the brain, we can find the functional areas like speech, or motor activity or sensory areas. Essentially, they want to stay away from those when they do the surgeries," said Dan Strelow, a CareFusion clinical specialist.

CareFusion is organizing a "brain lane" fundraiser at its offices to sell cupcakes and raise money.

People can drive through and pick up a cupcake and coffee for $5 at the CareFusion building on Deming Way in Middleton. The drive is on Friday, March 25 from 7 to 11 a.m.

All money will go toward epilepsy research.
