Local Team To Compete In Jr. Volleyball Championships

Local Team To Compete In Jr. Volleyball Championships

A local volleyball team will be competing the 2011 U.S. Jr. Championships in Atlanta from June 30 through July 3.

Only 32 teams in the country have earned a bid to compete in the 18 open divisions.

This is the highest level of volleyball female athletes can possibly play before going on to college, said David Bayer of the Capital Volleyball Academy.

Teams from California, Texas, Florida and states up and down the east coast have dominated the USA Jr. Championships in the last ten years.

Wisconsin has not produced an 18 open division team for the USA Championships since the 2002-2003 season.

This year’s 18 open division will be made up of only three teams from the Midwest Region:

Middleton Crews Respond To Fire In Underground Parking Area

Fire crews were called to fire in an underground parking structure at a Middleton apartment complex early Tuesday.

The fire began just before 8 a.m. at Brittany Apartments on the 1200 block of Sweeney Drive, according to the Middleton Fire Department.

Fire officials said a car started on fire, forcing the building to be evacuated. They said the fire was contained to the basement, but the entire building, which is more than 20 units, suffered smoke damage.

Several cars were damaged in the fire, but officials said it is too early to estimate the total damages.

"We were informed that there were people potentially still inside the building. We were able to assign search crews, who cleared the structure. We did find a few people inside, and we were able to get them out safely," said Chief Aaron Harris, of the Middleton Fire Department.

Nobody was hurt in the fire. Numerous pets were rescued by firefighters, fire officials said.
